Chapter Twenty

Mrs. Bowers and Zachary had breakfast on the side porch. He had another late shift today but wanted to make them pancakes. Mrs. Bowers happily made the coffee and put some bacon in the oven.

Both were surprised that Marlow wasn't up because she never slept in. "That cast is giving her a lot of trouble," Mrs. Bowers said. "I think I heard her up late last night."

Zachary thought about Marlow sound asleep in his bed when he got home. It felt right having her in there, but he knew things were complicated for her.

It was ten when they finished off the rest of the coffee. "I know a little lady that is going to be dragging if she doesn't get her cup of Joe this morning," Mrs. Bowers said. She remarked again that it was strange for Marlow to be still asleep, especially once she smelled the first pot of coffee brewing.

Zachary carried in all the dishes and offered to check on the sleepy head. When he got upstairs, it was eerily quiet.

Could someone have gotten in while he was sleeping? He knocked on Marlow's door, but she didn't answer. When he tried the door handle, it was locked.

With a little force, he yanked the door open. It took a few seconds for his eyes to adjust to the dark. He immediately saw that Marlow had pushed the giant chest of drawers in front of her window. She had her blankets pulled up over her head. Only her blond hair showed, and he was taken aback by how small she looked curled up there.

"Marlow? You okay?" he asked, but she didn't stir. Zachary gently pulled her covers back and pushed her hair off her face. She was so hot he withdrew his hand at first.

When he placed his palm on her forehead again, she blinked a few times but didn't fully wake. "Hey," she said, but he was sure she didn't know what she was saying.

Zachary wrapped her blanket around her body and scooped Marlow into his arms. Downstairs, he told Mrs. Bowers not to come close because Marlow was sick with a high fever, and he didn't want her to catch whatever it was, too.

Promising to call her once he knew anything, he had Marlow in the back seat of his car and was off to the new medical clinic within minutes.

The clinic was only a few miles from the boarding house, but Zachary was nervous that he should have called an ambulance instead. Marlow was talking gibberish in the back seat, and he was furious that he hadn't checked on her sooner.

He carried her inside and realized he wouldn't be able to answer most of their medical or personal questions about her. Thankfully, they tended to Marlow first and said they would get the information once she was stable.

Stable? Holy Mother, the thought that she needed to be stabilized felt like a punch to his stomach.

"Are you her husband or boyfriend?" the nurse asked, and without hesitation, Zachary said yes.
